Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Astronomical Instrumentation in association with a Henry Skynner Early Career Research Fellowship at Balliol College.
The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 2 years, with a possible extension subject to the schedule and funding for the MOSAIC project.
This project will develop the planning and implementation for testing the 2m-diameter focal plane of a multi-object spectroscopy facility for the Extremely Large Telescope (MOSAIC) and exploit the Weave spectroscopy survey data.
The successful candidate will coordinate the design and implementation, including prototyping, of an alignment and metrology system for the ensemble of 300 MOSAIC fibre positioners and build his or her career profile through the exploitation of the WEAVE surveys.
Applicants should possess, or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in astronomical instrumentation.
Previous experience in the field of multi-object spectroscopy will be an advantage.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate skills in problem solving, analysis, leadership, teaching and written and oral communication.
The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach in the department and will be asked to teach 2 hour per week in term for the college as well as participate in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise
