Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on tropical and post-tropical North Atlantic cyclones in a changing climate. The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 24 months.
How large is the risk that Britain gets hit by a Hurricane? How was that in the past and how might it change in the future? This post will be part of the UK-US partnership project Huracán to deliver a new, physical understanding of tropical cyclone risk across the British Isles, Western Europe, and the Northeast US in a changing climate.
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and dynamic researcher who is keen to make a positive contribution to the problems of the Huracán project. Your role within the project will be to study the large-scale dynamic and thermodynamic conditions that influence the development of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic and their risk of propagating towards the coastlines in the northeast and northwest. Using large data sets based on observations and ensemble model simulations, a special focus will be the question how multiannual to multidecadal variability in the climate system modulated these relationships during the 20th century.
Applicants should possess, or be close to obtaining, a doctorate in physics, meteorology, mathematics or a related field and ideally a strong background in atmospheric and climate science. Previous experience in the field of tropical cyclone and/or climate variability will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate drive and ability to perform novel research of international standing. Curiosity and the ability to analyse complex phenomena and to summarise these findings in peer-reviewed publications are a necessity. The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.
Only applications received before midday on 29 September 2023 can be considered. You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.
