This prestigious fellowship, based in the Department of Pharmacology, is for 2 years and is attached to Linacre College ( www.linacre.ox.ac.uk). Applications are invited from postdoctoral scientists or PhD students in final stages of their studies (submit thesis before appointment) for this Fellowship, which offers: • full salary support for the successful applicant
• a budget for travel and consumables
• accommodation at Linacre College, if required, along with full dining rights and access to College facilities.
• The Trust will also meet all visa and immigration health surcharge costs for the successful applicant.
The successful applicant will be embedded in any one of the research groups in the Department of Pharmacology (see www.pharm.ox.ac.uk/research) but will be responsible for formulating and developing their own research strategy. While the successful Fellow will be expected to work independently, they will be provided with support and mentorship from a Pharmacology PI and full access to all the space and facilities they need for their research.
Applications are considered from postdoctoral scientists and finishing graduate students in any area of natural sciences related to the research of the Department. In accordance with the terms of the Blaschko Trust preference will be given to students from all countries in geographical Europe whether or not those countries are members of the EU.
Responsibiities
1. Formulate research strategies, test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate.
2. Adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols.
3. Develop ideas for new research projects.
4. Manage own academic research. This involves small-scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work in order to meet deadlines.
5. Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters.
6. Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the Department- on scientific protocols and experimental techniques.
7. Represent their research at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the Department or alone.
8. Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups.
9. Responsibilities may also include: supervision of project students and contributing to the general running of the laboratory.
10. The Fellow will also have an opportunity to contribute two hours per week teaching on a voluntary basis.
Essential criteria
1 Have, or be close to completion of, a PhD in an appropriate science (eg pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, medicine, physics, computing, neuroscience), together with relevant experience.
2 Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes
3 Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities
4 Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations
5 Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation
6 Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publications, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings
7 Evidence that highlights previous research achievements (either in study or work environment)
8 Awareness of Health and Safety issues and good research practice.
This post is fixed-term for two years, funded by the Blaschko Trust.
