The Department of Chemistry is seeking a specialist analytical chemist to head the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy facility in the Chemistry Research Laboratory at the University of Oxford.
The Department of Chemistry features world-class high-resolution NMR spectroscopy facilities. The NMR facility houses thirteen solution-state and two solid-state FT NMR instruments with proton operating frequencies ranging up to 700 MHz, which are capable of running most experiments of interest to the research chemist. The facility supports the full range of chemical sciences research across the department and university. The NMR Director is supported by a small team providing services to over 400 users in the chemical sciences by providing an expert, problem-solving resource to researchers involving NMR data collection, interpretation and reporting.
The NMR Director is responsible for the provision and management of the service to support the research and teaching in the Department, as well as planning for future NMR spectroscopy needs, equipment, writing proposals for funding, introducing new techniques, and developing the service and its facilities. Full details of the role can be found in the job description.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in applied solution-state NMR spectroscopy, or in organic chemistry with significant appropriate NMR experience. They will have practical, current and a very broad range of NMR expertise, in particular covering organic and biological materials, with substantial experience at postdoctoral level working in the field, either in an academic institution or in industry. They will have experience in NMR system maintenance and upkeep and a proven record of expertise and innovation in NMR. They will be able to demonstrate excellent organisational, management and teaching ability and will possess good communication skills. Sound working knowledge of networked computing, UNIX system administration, and Windows / Mac operating systems and familiarity, along with the requirements of COSHH and Health and Safety Regulations, are also essential.
This is a full-time permanent position with an expected start date of mid-August/early September. The post is located at the Chemistry Research Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Mansfield Road, Oxford.
Applications for the vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your application.
