Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research assistant to be part of team working on slow earthquakes. The postholder will work closely with Dr Jessica Hawthorne, with responsibility for carrying out research to identify the fault zone processes that generate slow slip events as part of a NERC standard grant. The postholder will provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including PhD and project students.
The postholder will help constrain the fault zone processes that generate these events by developing our understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution of slow slip events. They will use frictional and statistical models to understand the growth, propagation, and heterogeneity of slow slip events and will compare the model predictions with observed events. The model testing will focus on Cascadia, where a wide range of slip events have been observed and where the Oxford group has recently identified more short bursts of tremor.
The postholder will manage their own academic research and administrative activities, contribute ideas for new research projects, develop ideas for generating research income and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers. They will also carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions and act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and techniques.
The postholder must hold a PhD in geophysics or another relevant discipline by the time of appointment, they must have sufficient knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmers, and they must have the ability to manage their own academic research and associated activities and have excellent communication skills, including writing for publication, presenting research proposals and results.
The post is currently funded until 30 April 2021, with the possibility of extension to 22 months subject to funding agency agreement. We wish to fill the post as early as is practical. For further details of the post please see the job description.
