Job Title: Operations Trainee/Apprentice
Responsible for assisting the delivery manager with the safe, on time and on budget delivery of all Colas Rail Freight train services within the nominated region, ensuring high levels of quality and reliability against various KPIs. Working under Delivery Manager direction to promote all Colas Rail values, including one team culture by actively liaising with different support functions. To provide assistance with the day to day management and support to all train crew staff within the nominated region.
An enthusiastic individual who is willing to learn about all aspects of safe operations within the rail freight sector.
Under direction of the Delivery Manager, to assist with the management of various aspects of Rail Freight Operations to ensure successful completion of work in the region.
Assist with the monitoring and management of train performance against agreed KPIs within the region.
Provide assistance to the delivery manager with first line management to all freight operational staff in the region with the assistance of principle drivers and principle ground staff.
Liaising with the planning team with regards to rosters and staffing requirements, monitoring the fleet of vehicles within the region, assisting with purchasing and procurement of equipment and liaising with the safety team in order to coordinate safety data and required actions
To assist with the monitoring of quality procedures and training of the workforce within the region.
To assist with collecting and interpreting information relating to accidents and incidents and to assist in the timely close out of reports.
To demonstrate a positive and proactive approach to all aspects of rail safety
To assist with regular Safety Tours and ensure that actions are closed out
Responsible for assisting with identifying training needs, route and traction learning requirements for operational staff. Implement the plans by liaising with training and rostering departments.
Liaise with the Delivery Manager to assist with staff training and competence assessments, placing and fuelling of locomotives and road vehicles and monitoring the real time operations of trains within the region.
Communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders by all available communication devices and means.
Participate in meetings with the Delivery Manager as required.
Assist the Delivery Manager with new traffic acceptance and formulating the cost model by providing relevant data as required.
Monitoring operational costs and reporting to the Delivery Manager
Identifying and driving operational savings where possible
Liaise with all drivers and groundstaff and assist with training, briefs and assessments where possible
Act as a point of contact for staff within the region in the Delivery manager¿s absence.

The job holder will:

- Be confident and a role model when dealing with all staff with respect and good attention to detail.
- Have an awareness of the current requirements for Health and Safety standards
- Be a proven team player with a pragmatic approach and logical mindset
- Have a good IT knowledge of Word/Excel/Power point
- In line with Level 4 Apprentice Scheme requirements; hold A levels in Mathematics and English
