Position: Apprentice Freight Train Driver
Division: Rail Services
Reporting to: Regional Operations Manager
Purpose of the Role
During the scheme as an apprentice freight train driver you will attend block release training and learn the more advanced skills of your technical specialism. Training will be in collaboration with EMR training academy based in Derby. There will be varying degrees of theoretical classroom work alongside on the job practical training and mentoring. This will also require various exams and assessments to be undertaken. You will be required to undertake work and classroom training in various locations around the country which also require an element of lodging away from your home location. Majority of training will be carried out in Derby. However upon successful completion of the training period, you are required to re-locate as per the job requirement. You will support and work alongside your designated mentor/instructor for the various disciplines required to obtain the qualification of competent freight train driver. You will be required to undertake all disciplines associated with a qualified freight train driver safely to the level of quality expected by the company and the Client; to budget and in line with all relevant standards, processes and procedures.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
Train in the safe, efficient and productive operation of freight trains.
Train in locomotive driving duties in accordance with laid down procedures.
Train in ensuring safety of the line and all employees and public that may be affected by the operation of trains.
Train in locomotive preparation and disposal duties, and fuel locomotives when required.
Train in Undertaking in-service locomotive, train faultfinding, and assist in repairs where competent.
Train in recording and reporting of locomotive and train defects in accordance with the Rulebook and Company Procedures
Train in preparing locomotives for service.
Train in undertaking train preparation/train in service freight examination.
Train to carry out the simplified brake test as directed.
Train in route learning procedures and the use of the route application software.
Train in undertaking weekly locomotive exams as required.
Work various shift patterns including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
Must be prepared to lodge away from home, when required.
Ensure the highest level of professionalism when dealing with other individuals within the company, clients and members of the public.

Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time
The job holder will have
Math's and English literature level C and above
Be committed to complete a minimum one programme & work shifts that are key to operational delivery (weekends, nights and bank holidays)
